Exploring the Benefits of Fasting in Yoga Practice: A Guide to Ekadashi Fasting
Since I moved to Norway, I’ve noticed that many people skip breakfast to maintain intermittent fasting. This practice fits perfectly for some, while leaving others feeling overwhelmed by the question: “Wait, how do they do it?”
Fasting offers many benefits by stimulating our body to move into survival mode, which triggers recovery and healing from the inside out. Plus, a lot of energy is preserved: instead of digesting, our body finally gets time to cleanse, rest, and recover. The purpose of this article is not to convince readers that fasting is required for yoga, but it may be another tool for longevity, clear focus, and better health.
What if fasting affects my mood? The mind is a powerful tool. I used to get “hangry” when food did not come my way at regular intervals. After several Ekadashi fasts, I realized that my body can be trained. Similar to how waking up early may feel uncomfortable at first, with time, it gets easier. If my tolerance used to stretch to a maximum of 30 minutes, now it can be three or four hours. That is enough time for the sense of hunger to pass.
What if my blood sugar goes low? Ekadashi provides flexibility by adjusting the “severity” of your limitations. On days when I need to play my A-game, I allow myself to drink lemon water with a tablespoon of raw honey instead of a meal. If you are vegan, you may consider some vegan-friendly alternatives.
Can I still drink? To challenge the mind as well as the body, one may opt for a dry fast. However, if this is your first fast, it may be best to be in the company or under the supervision of your acharya/yoga teacher or experienced yoga practitioners who can observe you and provide advice as needed.
Why follow the Ekadashi calendar? The Ekadashi calendar follows the 11th day of the lunar calendar, meaning fasting happens twice a month. I personally find that fasting on these specific days (plus or minus one day) is easier than on other days. Here is the link to the Ekadashi calendar

Please note that the day and time may vary depending on your location.
Where shall I begin? Inform your yoga teacher if you want to start Ekadashi fasting. Start small. Perhaps begin with a vegetarian diet on those days. Next time, you may skip all carbs and sugar. The third time, try skipping food and keeping a glass of juice instead of a meal. Then, try fasting only on water or a dry fast, if there are no contraindications from your doctor.
Please note that you need to consult your doctor if you have any chronic or mental diseases or are taking medication on a daily basis.
In fasting, as in all yogic practices, it is important to listen to your body with gentle attentiveness and adjust as required.
